MAJOR EMPLOYERS AND INDUSTRIES

Both diversification and economic restructuring have been the ongoing focus of Economic Development for Central Oregon, elected leaders, and the business community for the past decade and a half. These efforts have proven largely successful in transforming the region's industry and employment from a 70-year reliance on the three legged stool of forest products, agriculture and the relatively recent visitor industry to one that has foundations in a variety of manufacturing, high technology, services, and specialty manufacturing.

Listed below are Central Oregon’s largest non-government employers. Central Oregon’s business community is typified by innovative, small companies producing niche-market products and services, from semiconductors to software, medical instruments to recreation equipment. Despite a smaller population base than other West Coast metro areas, Central Oregon possesses a business sophistication and amenities typically found only in big cities – from support services to world-class heal care. The region is supportive of business and has a well-educated workforce, bolstered by new residents who choose to relocate primarily from metropolitan areas in California and Washington, as well as Portland and the Willamette Valley. To encourage entrepreneurial formation, EDCO helps connect early stage companies with needed resources and capital in the region and provides guidance for company expansion.
